Each battery is a fully integrated energy storage solution enabling users to change the way they manage and control their energy. The battery storage system is installed together with your Solar PV purchase or can be added to an existing Solar PV system.

Is there a grant for home batteries?

No, there is no longer a grant for home batteries. When installing a home battery alongside Solar PV, you can still avail of Solar PV grant of up to €2,400.


What is a Solar Battery Storage system?

Store your Solar generated electricity for later use in your home. The battery system can be programmed to charge on cheaper night rate electricity resulting in further savings and lower bills.

Monitor power usage

To see how much power your home is using a good quality broadband connection is necessary. Once installed the homeowner can review both the live and cumulative energy usage in the home on the free energy app from their smartphone.

No disruption installation

When we install the Electric Ireland Solar battery in your home, it is usually placed as close to the main electrical distribution board as possible. The location will be agreed beforehand with the homeowner. Installation typically takes one day to complete. Most of the work will be in the area of the distribution board, minimising any disruption.

Our trained technicians will carry out a detailed survey of your property to determine suitability and agree the location of the battery. An installation date will also be arranged if you wish to proceed.

There are 2 payment options: 1) You can pay the amount upfront or 2) 50% is payable after survey and final balance is payable following installation.

The Sonnen Battery is a fully integrated energy storage solution with perfectly synchronized components including battery modules, integrated bi-directional inverter and smart energy management system supplied in one easy-to-install cabinet. Much more than just a battery, the Sonnen battery enables users to change the way they manage and control their energy.

2. What size are the batteries?

5 kWh which is the most common size for residential use.

7.5 kWh and 10 kWh also available.

3. How big is the battery and where can it be installed

The 5 kWh battery measures 88cm x 67cm x 23 and weighs 81kg

The 7.5 kWh battery measures 139cm x 67cm x 23cm and weighs 120kg

The 10 kWh battery measures 139cm x 67cm x 23cm and weighs 143kg

The battery is normally installed in the garage or utility room, location can be agreed at time of site survey. Installation normally takes less than a day to complete.

4. How does the battery work?

The battery stores the unused generated power from your solar PV array for later use, this ensures that you use practically all the power your PV has generated .The battery can also be set to charge on cheaper night rate electricity which can then be used during the day for further savings. The Sonnen battery optimises self-consumption by using weather forecasting and self-learning usage algorithms to create an individual usage profile to maximise self-consumption in the home.

5. What kind of warranty comes with the Sonnen battery?

The Sonnen Battery comes with a market-leading warranty of 10 years or 10,000 charge cycles, and a battery service life of 20 years. The performance guarantee states that the battery will be not less than 70% of its installed capacity after 10,000 cycles.

6. Can I add additional battery storage capacity later if my needs change?

Yes, additional battery modules can be simply installed into your Sonnen battery should your requirements change.

7. Does the Sonnen battery need to be connected to the internet?

Yes, the Sonnen battery relies on an internet connection to provide the system monitoring. Broadband is necessary to remotely identify and fix system faults online, as well as provide regular, free software updates to ensure that the functionality of the system is up-to-date. Internet connection is part of the warranty conditions.

8. How do I monitor my Sonnen battery?

The free Sonnen app and web portal provide an easy-to-use interface giving you the ability to monitor and manage your energy usage and generation 24/7. You can view current and historic data as well as see a forecast of expected solar generation and consumption for the next three days. The Sonnen app is available to download in iOS or Android stores – just search for “Sonnen”. There is a demo feature on the app which will enable you to explore the functionality of the system.

9. Will I still have power in the event of a power cut?

Due to grid safety requirements the battery will not operate in the event of a power cut. However a back up reserve unit is available as an optional extra.

10. Can I purchase a Sonnen battery from Electric Ireland if I already have Solar PV installed?

Yes, as well as supplying and installing a battery as an optional extra with our Solar PV installations Electric Ireland can supply and install a battery to homeowners who have existing Solar PV installed in their homes.
