How to read your electricity meter

Standard Meter

Make a note of the number, reading from left to right. Please ignore the figures in red or surrounded by a red box.

And remember, if you have night storage heaters, you'll have two of these meters.

Day and night meter

You'll find that these meters may have numbers '1' and '2' or the Roman numerals 'I' and 'II' beside each register referring to Night and Day respectively.

The night charges apply between 11 p.m. and 8.a.m. (wintertime) and between midnight and 9.a.m. (summertime).

Reading a digital meter

Standard Electronic meter

In this case, you need to press the blue button on the meter until 'Day' or 'Night' is visible on the screen. Then take the reading from left to right, ignoring figures after the decimal point.

Reading your digital electricity meter (RM257, 258 or 259).

24 hour meter:

  • Press 1st Screen: Displays today's date
  • Press Scroll button: Displays current time
  • Press Scroll button twice: '0' appears , followed by a reading - this is your total electricity usage

Day and Night meter:

  • Press Scroll button again: A small '2' will appear indicating its your day read
  • Press Scroll button again: A small '1' will appear indicating its your night read


There are no decimal points on this meter so please submit all the digits. The small arrow below the readings indicates that the installation is live.

Reading a Pay As You Go meter

For this meter, if you press the number 9 on the keypad it will give you the reading.
