When will I receive the €250 government electricity credit?
For PAYG customers the application of the Government Electricity Credit will follow a different process.
Smarter Pay as You Go Meters
The Government has stated that the credit will be a €250 (inc. VAT) and will be available in two instalments of €125 (inc. VAT).
- The first credit instalment of €125 will be automatically applied to your Smarter PAYG meter from November 1, 2024.
- The second credit instalment of €125 will be automatically applied to your Smarter PAYG meter from January 1, 2025.
Standard Pay As You Go meters
The Government has stated that the credit will be a €250 (inc. VAT) and will be available in two instalments of €125 (inc. VAT).
- The first credit instalment of €125 will be available from November 1, 2024.
- The second credit instalment of €125 will be available to customers from January 1, 2025.
Our standard PAYG meters have limitations that do not allow us to apply the credit automatically.
The steps required to avail of the electricity credit are outlined below. There is no expiry date on the vend codes, so you can vend when it suits you to collect the credit.
Topping up is easy and there are multiple flexible ways to Top Up your PAYG meter.
1. Buy a €10 electricity top up. This purchase will provide you with a vend code.
2. Go to your PAYG meter and input your vend code, this code will add €125 government credit and your €10 top up to your account (total €135).
Who is eligible?
You are eligible to receive the electricity credits if you are a domestic customer (classified as DG1 (urban domestic customer) or DG2 (rural domestic customer)), registered with an electricity supplier in the Republic of Ireland with a unique Meter Point Registration Number (MPRN), and have used over 150kWh of energy in at least one quarter between 1 September 2023 and 31 August 2024 inclusive.
If you are a domestic customer with a unique MPRN, but your account is identified as being low usage electricity (i.e. has used less than 150kWh of energy in every quarter between 1 September 2023 and 31 August 2024 inclusive), you may still be eligible to receive the credits if:
- you are, or are eligible to be, a registered vulnerable customer, and/or
- you are a hardship meter account holder, and/or
- your supplier is satisfied that the MPRN address is the account holder’s primary residence.
If you have a microgeneration account registered on the effective date (30 October 2024 for the first payment period, and 20 December 2024 for the second payment period) and your maximum export capacity (MEC) is above zero, you will not be included on the low usage list and you will therefore receive the credit.
Under the Act of 2024, if you are eligible to register as a vulnerable customer, you qualify for the credits whether or not you choose to be included on the vulnerable customer register.
